The Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, the University of Turku and Lapland University of Applied Sciences invite you to an online roundtable exploring career assessment matrices and their role in supporting responsible researcher assessment on 31 August, 13:00–15:00 CEST (14:00–16:00 Finnish time/EEST). The webinar will be held in English.

Register to the webinar here.

Registration is open until 21 August 2026. Registered participants will receive a link closer to the event.

Career assessment matrices (CAM) are practical tools that help organisations assess researchers in a more holistic, fair and transparent way. Rather than focusing primarily on publications and quantitative indicators, career assessment matrices recognise a broad range of researchers' contributions and competencies.

During the event, speakers from Finland, Sweden and Norway will share how career assessment matrices are being developed and used in their national contexts. Through presentations and discussion, participants will gain insights into how these tools can support the implementation of responsible researcher assessment.

The programme will include:

  • Presentations on national approaches to career assessment matrices
  • Expert reflections on how career assessment matrices can support responsible researcher assessment
  • A panel discussion exploring the role of career assessment matrices in researcher assessment

The webinar builds on earlier discussions within the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) on practical tools for advancing research assessment reform. In particular, the topic was discussed during a meeting of CoARA National Chapters held in March, where representatives from different countries exchanged experiences on how to implement responsible research assessment in practice. A key theme of these discussions was the need for concrete tools and mutual learning to support implementation across organisations and national contexts.

Organised as a part of the CoARA Boost Cascade Funded Project Implementing Framework for Assessment: Case FIN-CAM, the event is open to the CoARA community including research service staff, researchers, HR professionals and anyone interested in responsible researcher assessment.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Ragnar Lie (Universities Norway)
  • Johan Blaus (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
  • Cristina Martinez (European Commission)
  • Miia Ijäs-Idrobo (The Union of Research Professionals)
  • Rita Morais (EUA, CoARA Working Group on Reforming Academic Career Assessment)
